Raw Inspiration and Absolute Awe
Mia Pearlman is a Brooklyn-based Jill of all (artsy) trades. She graduated from Cornell University with a BFA in painting, has been involved with several prestigious artist residency programs, is skilled in web design, and over the past year or two has been making a splash in the ever-evolving and captivating world of installation and mixed media artforms with her cut paper and graphite creations. Using natural disasters and weather patterns as an obvious source of inspiration, Mia has had a torrent of both group and solo shows across the map.

I remember the exact feeling that came over me as my eyes caught a glimpse of her work for the first time (here): a perfect combination of raw inspiration and absolute awe. How could someone dream up such beautiful, complex, fragile creations – not to mention maintain a (presumably) painstakingly precise hand to actually create and install such elaborate masterpieces?

Mia’s most recent project, Voluta, involves laser cut sculptures in spectacular do-it-yourself fashion, made of luminous high-impact polystyrene.

In correlation with an upcoming exhibition called Slash: Paper Under the Knife at the Museum of Arts & Design in NY (Oct. 13, 2009-April 14, 2010), you can purchase your very own limited-edition Voluta in the Museum gift shop throughout the shows stay, or pre-order one here.

Captivated by her creativity, I am. WOW, maybe I should stop being such a total Star Wars nerd?

I LOVE this and your entire blog! The way I first found out about Design Sponge (above) was when she featured my Urban Forest Project banner in her writeup about that project. I was floored! http://www.designspongeonline.com/2006/09/the-urban-forest-project.html
The sheer scale of these is pretty amazing. I can’t imagine the time put into conceptualizing them, let alone executing the final design. It looks like worm-holes or some kind of cosmic storm on a minor scale. I love that all the rooms they are installed in are in grayscale. I want a huge paper tornado in my room!!!
simply beautiful exhibit. the first photograph is stunning
