The Monster Within, the monster under your skin

Here are some photos of my senior thesis collection, entitled “Le Monstre Dans”, or “The Monster within”.

The title and concept of the collection alludes to my battle with cancer at age 23, just before starting my senior year. The concept of “overgrowth” just kind of seeped into my mental processes throughout the year… taking over, appropriately.

I was inspired by historical fabric manipulations, like smocking and striping, but altered in a contemporary and modern way. Big inspirations also included Hans Bellmer, french rococo, and 1970’s glam/punk style.

“What is considered good and virtuous can, in excess, become a lethal element that overtakes the mental and physical self. Dreams can become nightmares; life can become malignant. In this collection, the soft girlish appeal of pastels and supple fabric have been hijacked by lethal spikes and overgrown fabric manipulations, transforming the female body from precious to perilous.”
