Harvest season is my favorite time of the year. I’ve always looked forward to the transition of summer into fall , and all things related to autumn. From starting fresh with a new school year, planning out my birthday celebrations, searching for the perfect Halloween costume, and the paradox of the slow yet quick festive build-up into Christmas and New Year.  And before you know it, you’re struck on how quickly an entire year just flew by, just like that! Buuuuuut as Frank Sinatra sang, “That’s life.” Fall amongst other things is my favorite season for fashion. This season, however, I’ve noticed that the whole “Fashion recycles itself” has never been so apparent as now. Out of boredom and Sunday blues I’ve sifted through my picture folder of my self-indulgent outfit posts and each and every one item I’ve collected in my closet from last fall, summer, spring are interchangeable for fall. In short, maxi dresses, lace, leather shorts and fringe are here to stay.

Time Out with Amy Phamous

My friend Amy Pham is a DJ from Los Angeles who coined her DJ moniker when her friends started calling her Phamous in high school. Her throwback tracks always gets the party started as her little die-for ensembles are always a perk to watch out for on the dance floor. Watch out for Amy Phamous, because you’ll definitely be seeing more of her in the future.
When did you start djing?
I started DJ-ing a year ago.  My brother brought home a set of turntables, so I pulled out some dusty vinyl and holed myself up for hours learning how to match beats.  A couple months later I was at a friend’s rooftop pool party downtown.  I jumped on the tables and from then on I was instantly hooked. I was decent, so I kept at it and here I am!

What could an audience expect to hear during your set?
Honestly, anything and everything. I have no qualms about playing a certain genre because as long as it’s a good song, then it’s a good song.  I’ll go from golden-era hip hop like A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B. and Rakim, to old funk and disco like Mary Jane Girls or Isley Brothers. I’ll mix in some Crystal Castles, Duck Sauce, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys… It’s all about the audience, and whatever makes them move. I try to throw in a little bit of everything for everyone.

What are the perks of your job? The downside?
I love that my job involves one of my passions– music.  I get to surround myself with it: I play music, learn about new music, and then get paid for it.  When I’m on the decks and playing for the crowd, people are dancing, and everyone’s having a good time, then it doesn’t even feel like a job.  The vibe and the atmosphere is thrilling and you get such a rush when you’re in that moment.  The free drinks don’t hurt either.  But on the other hand, most people think that DJ-ing is all fun and games and partying.  There’s so much more behind the scenes that comes with the territory: endless promoting, event planning, making sure the night’s going smoothly, that the sound equipment is running okay… it can be really stressful because you’re trying to take care of a million different things while people are spilling drinks all over you and yelling in your ear.  But like with any job, you have to be persistent and dedicated if you want to be successful.

What has been your favorite gig?
It’s so hard to pick just one, because every gig for me has it’s own set of experiences and lessons I take from it (and crazy things happen at every one.) I can’t really compare one to another. At each gig, when I get on and I drop the first song, when everyone screams and the whole room moves, all the adrenaline and energy, there’s no words to describe it.  So essentially every gig is my favorite gig.
What is your dream job?
My dream gig is the one where I get paid millions of dollars to play a 10-minute set.  Honestly though, a dream gig would be to probably play in a huge raging festival somewhere where everyone from every background is just going bonkers, throwing away all pretensions and just grinding on each other and stuff during my set.  I would love to wield that power.  And I it’d be great to spin more fashion shows because I love fashion and being able to combine the two is a dream gig in itself.  Marc Jacobs, call me.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
It’s hard to say because my goals are constantly changing.  Right now I’m in the middle of expanding my musical endeavors; I’m currently making remixes and recording tracks. Before I was a DJ, I was a dancer and I really loved it. So eventually I would love to be performing with my own music rather than playing everyone else’s. I’m also working on a clothing and jewelry line (CA VOI, which is currently being sold at the Gas’d Station Pop Up Shop), which I hope will evolve in 10 year’s time. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a shop.  My childhood dream was a boutique that sold pastries too, because anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge sucker for sweets and desserts.

Who are your music inspirations?
My top inspirations (not in order of importance): Bjork, Portishead, J-Dilla, Mos Def, The Cure (mainly Robert Smith), Betty Davis, Grace Jones, James Brown, Kool Herc, KRS-One, Slick Rick, My Bloody Valentine (mainly Kevin Smith)…The list goes on and on.  I get random obsessive phases too.  Currently, I’m reading a book about the underground punk movement in the 1980′s and getting inspired by cult bands like Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Minute Men… They had such a strong sense of individuality, and through their music they really gave themselves to their fans and everyone associated with the movement really identified with their music.  It was just so powerful and raw, and I’m all for the anti-authority, non-conformist way they approached everything.

What is the “Most Played Song” on your I-Tunes?
I don’t have I-Tunes, believe it or not. But my ringtone is “This Charming Man” by The Smiths so I suppose that would be my “Most Played Song.”  But right now whenever I’m near a computer I’m either playing Glitter by No Age, Superblast! by Lush, or That Tree by Kid Cudi (it’s produced by Diplo, and I listen to Kid Cudi’s first mixtape constantly).

List five things you can’t live without.
-Dessert (and anything involving chocolate)
-Gold glitter
-Goodwill (where I get 98% of my clothes)
-My inhaler (I have asthma, so it’s literally something I can’t live without)
-Laptop (a.k.a. my DJ home-office-station-headquarters)
What are your favorite blogs? (For either music/fashion/inspiration)
Are blogs the new magazine equivalent?  I read magazines more than I read blogs, because I actually try to keep away from the internet if I’m not doing DJ-related work. I’ll click a link here, a link there, and I lose time I could have spent working on my craft…thus I don’t know of too many blogs. But I do read different fashion/music newsletters that happen to appear in my email inbox.  Some of my favorite ones I find in my email from time to time are Refinery 29, Who What Wear Daily, All Saints… and then I go to Youtube for obscure music videos or old Soul Train episodes.  Music-wise, I used to be subscribed to lala.com but they don’t exist anymore. I do frequent Wikipedia. A lot. And I read Vibe and Filter whenever I can get my hands on them.

Words of wisdom to aspiring disk jockeys:
Always keep a needle brush and earplugs handy.

Anything else?

1.  I can roll my tongue all the way around– 180 degrees (if you see me in person, ask me and I’ll prove it to you).
2.  I recently found out I’m an eighth French.  All my life I thought I was full Vietnamese.
3.  I used to have really weird OCD tendencies.  Like everything had to be even: if I accidentally stepped on someone’s shoe, I had to step on the other one to even it out.  Or if I grabbed jelly beans, I had to grab an even number

Time Out with Hannah + Landon

Hannah and Landon Metz are two picture perfect lovebirds who have graced the web with an abundance of beautiful  photographs from their daily life encapsuled in their self titled blog Hannahandlandon.  Since the ignition of their  ‘love-at-first-click’ romance traced back to a livejournal comment back in 2004, their romance and adventures have captivated a virtual audience green with life-envy. (Viewer’s discretion: Be prepared to spend countless hours consuming pixel perfection in all its glory.)  Don’t forget to check out their flickr account as well!

Introduce yourselves.

H: My name is Hannah, I’m presently 25 years of age, living in  Brooklyn and one
half of vintage wholesale company The Loved One. Landon and I used to tell
people we met at the airport (which has some truth to it) but really  we met on
livejournal.com about six years ago, hehe.

L: My name is Landon Metz, I’m 25, living in Brooklyn and my main occupation
would be freelance graphic designer.

Describe a typical day in your life.

L: I recently made a daily schedule for myself that breaks each day  into hourly
blocks. I’ve been doing my best to follow it, haha! An average day  starts with
meditation and yoga, then clean up and make breakfast. I start my  work day and
depending on the day I’ll either do design or work on artwork for 8  hours with
lunch break. Then I’ll do some reading before the evening. We’ve been having
dinners at our apartment every other wednesday that are open to  whoever wants to
come, it’s been really great! Usually on Thursdays we try to walk over the
Williamsburg bridge with some friends and go to openings and walk around the
city, fun!

H: Landon made the same schedule for me that I’ve been having a little more
trouble following, hehe. After my noble attempt at early morning  yoga I wash up
and start steaming and prepping clothing for the shop, I then build  a stack of
books into a makeshift tripod and make serious faces while wearing a  variety of
outfits in front of the camera. Break for a bagel outing and trip to the post
office then return to upload and describe aforementioned outfits and cross my
fingers in hopes that somebody will purchase so I can afford to wake  up and do
it all over again! We usually end the day with a game of cards and  streaming of
favourite tv shows (right now we’re watching True Blood and Big Love).

What are your musings and inspiration?

H: Pre-20th century European art really floats my boat, the pre-raphaelites
especially hold a sweet place in my heart. Brace yourself for this  is going to
be shamelessly cheesy but Landon is most certainly my biggest inspiration.

L: The universal consciousness, free flow of life, minimalism and  love. Hannah
obviously plays a major role in the muse department.

If you could compile a collection of songs to make ‘The  Soundtrack of Our Life’, what would be on it?

H: This one is difficult! Landon?
L: That is hard! Right now I’m listening to the likes of Terry Riley and Ed
Askew and Black Uhuru and Tata Dindin and a whole lot more! We also play the
classic Mickey Mouse cartoons a lot while we work in our apartment.

H:  Haha, yes! Old Mickey songs! Also a lot of Kate Bush, Billie  Holiday, Nina Simone and Lil Wayne!

Where do you find most of your furniture and one-of-a-kind ensembles?

H & L: Flea markets!

What is your favorite part about living in New York? What is the least?

H: You can’t slack off in New York! Everybody is so motivated that you can’t
help but get your business taken care of. We’ve found a pretty  wonderful group
of people to surround ourselves with which makes things a million  times better
no matter where you are. My least favourite thing? That my family is so far
away! I’m a bit of a mamas girl so it pains me some to be living not only in
another country but on opposite sides of the continent.
L: Everything about New York is amazing, such a vibrant place! I know the day
will come when we will move to a more natural environment and I feel  thats all
the city is lacking. It’s the best of one world, but the other will always be
hovering over us, calling us to return and someday we will.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

H: My dream is to have my own shop up and running giving me the  freedom to run
around the world collecting goodies and exploring. I’d like to have  enough money
and time to give back to a world that has been quite generous with me in love and life thus far.
L: In a really good place.

What have been your favorite places to travel and why?

H: Landon will say Hawaii and I have to agree that it is MOST  beautiful and I’d
love to go back. We are at the moment visiting my Dad in my hometown  Ottawa and
am thoroughly enjoying it, I guess favourite places to travel are wherever my
family is! Though that is not nearly the exciting answer you had  anticipated so
I will also add that I’d like to return to Morocco one day for some more mint
tea and delicious foods.

L: Haha it’s true I love Hawaii, specifically the island of Kaui. It’s a tropical paradise and I’d like to live there one day!

What are your favorite blogs?

H: I enjoy http://fashionforwriters.comhttp://alagarconniere.blogspot.com and
http://www.clevernettle.com/blog.

What are your random quirks ?

H: I have a variety of small ailments constantly afflicting me.
L: I looooove spicy food and chocolate.
